THe agave

project

The Agave Project is our way of continuing Cuervo’s long-standing commitment to the land and people of Tequila and Mexico

We’re shaping a more sustainable future for the community that has supported us for 10 generations. Jose Cuervo Agave Straws are our most recent effort to proudly support the Agave Project’s commitment to sustainability. The first-of-its-kind, biodegradable, bio-based drinking straw is a more sustainable alternative to regular plastic straws and will decompose up to 200 times faster than traditional plastic ones.

FINDING SUSTAINABLE USES FOR JOSE CUERVO AGAVE FIBER

From bricks to build homes to biodegradable straws to sip tequila, Jose Cuervo is working to find more creative uses for agave fiber, the same raw material used to make our tequila. Made using Jose Cuervo agave as one its principle components, our drinking straws can biodegrade fully within one to five years in landfill conditions. The straws replace around a third of the polymers used in traditional straw production. Our goal is the pursuit of better — better tequila, better communities, and a better world for us all.

SUSTAINABLE SIPPING

In summer 2021, on a mission to plant Cuervo’s name within sustainable drinking, we launched the Jose Cuervo Agave Straw, a 100% biodegradable agave straw made with recycled Jose Cuervo agave fiber.

Hundreds of thousands of consumers responded; we received over 200,000 orders from our straw giveaway in less than three days. We continue to be blown away by the excitement for sustainable sipping and are working hard to meet demand for sustainable agave-based products in 2022.

water security

When there’s no water, there’s no work. And when there’s no work, there are no adult males — they all have to leave to earn money, to send home to their families. So we’re helping to bring water security to one rural Oaxacan community…

saving arroqueño

Unlike most sugar sources used to make spirits, agave has to be harvested before it can reproduce, putting at risk the sustainability of long-growth varietals like arroqueño….

earthquake relief

The earthquakes of September 2017 did significant damage in Mexico, though largely missed the communities we work with. But there was some damage, so we rallied our supporters…
